Childhood Bullying Doesn't Always Stay in the Past

When we think about bullying we often picture something that happened a long time ago. Something we should have moved on from by now. But for many adults the effects of childhood bullying don't simply disappear when school ends, they quietly shape the way we see ourselves, the way we relate to other people and the way we move through the world for years, sometimes decades, afterwards. If you've ever wondered why you struggle with confidence, find it hard to trust people or feel like you're never quite good enough, your experiences growing up may have more to do with it than you realise.

What Counts as Childhood Bullying?

Bullying isn't always obvious. Many adults who carry the effects of childhood bullying don't even identify what happened to them as bullying. It doesn't always look the way we expect it to. Being physically hurt or verbally abused are the forms most people recognise. But bullying can also look like being deliberately left out of friendship groups, being ignored or excluded, having rumours spread about you, being laughed at or humiliated, or simply never quite feeling like you belonged. Being left out repeatedly, excluded from groups, not invited, made to feel invisible are all forms of bullying that causes real and lasting damage to self esteem and confidence, even if it left no visible marks. If any of this sounds familiar, your feelings are completely valid.

How Childhood Bullying Affects Your Self Esteem as an Adult

Children are still forming their sense of identity and self worth when bullying happens. When the message you receive repeatedly- whether through words, actions or exclusion — is that you are not good enough, not likeable, not worthy of belonging — that message can become deeply internalised. As an adult this can show up as a persistent feeling that you are somehow less than other people. That you don't deserve good things. That if people really knew you they wouldn't like you. Low self esteem rooted in childhood bullying can be incredibly stubborn because it was formed at a time when you had no ability to question or challenge it. A child cannot easily reason their way out of feeling worthless, they simply absorb it.

The Link Between Childhood Bullying and Adult Anxiety

Growing up in an environment where you felt unsafe, excluded or under threat teaches your nervous system to stay on high alert. For many adults who experienced bullying as children, anxiety becomes the default setting.. a constant low level hum of worry about what people think, whether you're being judged, whether you're about to be excluded or humiliated again.

People Pleasing, Trust and Relationship Difficulties

When your early experiences taught you that belonging was conditional, that you had to earn your place or risk being cast out- it's natural to carry that into adult relationships. Many adults who were bullied as children become people pleasers, constantly working to keep others happy for fear of rejection. Others find it very hard to trust people, keeping others at arm's length to avoid being hurt again. Relationships can feel complicated when deep down you're waiting for people to let you down or turn on you. These patterns make complete sense given what you went through- but they can also keep you stuck and prevent you from forming the close, trusting connections you deserve.

Why You Might Feel Like You're Never Good Enough

One of the most common things adults who experienced childhood bullying describe is a persistent sense of not being good enough, no matter what they achieve. They can be successful, liked, in a good relationship and still hear a voice inside telling them they're a fraud, that it won't last, that people will eventually see through them. This is sometimes called imposter syndrome, and whilst it affects many people, it is particularly common in adults whose sense of self worth was damaged early in life. The achievements stack up but the feeling never quite changes- because the belief underneath hasn't been addressed. That's exactly where counselling can help.

Affected by Childhood Bullying? How Counselling in Christchurch BH23 and Counselling in West Moors BH22 can help

You don't have to have had a dramatic or obvious experience of bullying for it to have left a mark. Many of the adults I work with at BCW Counselling carry quiet wounds from childhood, experiences of exclusion, humiliation or simply never quite fitting in, that have shaped their confidence, their relationships and their sense of self in ways they are only beginning to understand. Counselling provides a safe, confidential and non judgmental space to explore those experiences, understand the impact they've had and start to build a more compassionate relationship with yourself. You are not broken. You are not too sensitive. What happened to you mattered and you deserve support to work through it. If you're based in Christchurch BH23, West Moors BH22, Bournemouth or the surrounding areas, face to face sessions are available. Online sessions are also available across the UK.
