Mental Health Awareness Week 2026: Small Actions Matter For Your Mental Health

Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 12–18 May 2026, and this year the Mental Health Foundation is encouraging all of us to take action. Not a grand gesture. Not a life overhaul. Just one small step that could make a difference — to your own mental health or somebody else’s.
As a counsellor based in Christchurch and West Moors, I wanted to share something personal this week.
Getting Outside Makes a Real Difference- Get outside in Christchurch and West Moors

Like many people, there are days when my head feels full. When the noise of everyday life, work, responsibilities, the mental load of just keeping things moving starts to build up. One of the things that genuinely helps me is getting outside in the fresh air for a walk. There’s something about movement, fresh air, and being present with the people make you feel good that resets everything. No phone in hand, no agenda, just a walk along the seafront or somewhere tranquil.
It sounds simple because it is. And that’s the point.
This Year’s Theme: Action
The Mental Health Foundation’s theme for 2026 is Action — because research consistently shows that doing something, however small, is one of the most powerful things we can do for our mental wellbeing.
Action doesn’t have to mean booking a gym session or starting a new routine. It can look like:
• Taking a walk in the fresh air, even just for 10 minutes
• Spending time with your family or someone who makes you feel good
• Picking up the phone to call a friend you’ve been meaning to check in on
• Sitting outside with a cup of tea instead of scrolling
• Saying yes to something you’d usually avoid
The key is that you do something. Because inaction — staying stuck in the same loop — is often what allows low mood and anxiety to grow.
What Action Could You Take This Week for your Mental Health
I’d encourage you to think about one person in your life who might be struggling quietly right now. A friend you haven’t spoken to in a while. A family member who seems a bit withdrawn. A colleague who hasn’t seemed themselves lately.
You don’t need to have the right words. You don’t need to fix anything. Sometimes just reaching out — a text, a call, a knock on the door — is the action that matters most.
And if it’s your own mental health that needs some attention this week, that’s just as valid. Recognising that and doing something about it — even something small — is a brave and important step.
