Struggling with low confidence or anxiety? Low self-esteem might be at the root of it. In this blog, we’ll explore what low self-esteem is, how it’s linked to anxiety, and how counselling can help you feel more in control and confident.

What is Low Self-Esteem?
Low self-esteem means having a consistently negative view of yourself. You may feel like you’re not good enough, others are better than you or more deserving, doubt your abilities, or find it difficult to accept compliments or positive feedback. People with low self-esteem often:
Worry what others think
Hold back in conversations or social situations
Avoid going for jobs or opportunities
Feel stuck in cycles of self-doubt or fear of failure
This can lead to a constant feeling of being judged, misunderstood, or like you’re not reaching your potential.

How Are Anxiety and Low Self-Esteem Linked?
Anxiety often hides behind low self-esteem. When you don’t feel confident in yourself, it’s easy to feel anxious about being judged, rejected, or making mistakes.
That inner voice of self-doubt can stop you from fully engaging with life—whether it’s applying for a job, setting boundaries in relationships, or simply speaking up. The fear of not being good enough can fuel anxious thinking and lead to avoidance behaviour's. Avoidance might create a temporary feeling of comfort or safety, but in the long run it reinforces the belief you can't cope- which further chips away at your self-esteem, confidence and can make you feel like others are better than you.
