The Summer Holidays... It's not all as wonderful as it sounds
The school gates close, the sun comes out and suddenly you're expected to transform into a full time entertainer, referee, chef, endless money supply and chauffeur- all while keeping on top of work, the house and everything else life throws at you. If you're halfway through the summer holidays and running on empty or close to burn out, you are absolutely not alone. Parental stress during the summer is everywhere, yet not always talked about honestly. This blog is for every parent who loves their children deeply but is quietly counting down the days until September.
Social Media and How it can make your efforts feel insufficient or cause unnecessary Stress and Anxiety
Scroll through Instagram or Facebook in August and it can feel like every other family is at a theme park, a holiday abroad or a perfectly organised day out with matching outfits and smiling faces. The pressure to constantly entertain your children during six weeks (realistically it's seven) off school is relentless and completely unrealistic. Children do not need to be stimulated every minute of every day. Boredom is actually good for them. But when you're the one fielding "I'm bored" for the fifth time before 9am, which often spills into siblings bickering or fighting.. that can feel very hard to remember. For working parents the summer holidays create an almost impossible juggling act. Childcare is expensive, annual leave is limited (I think limited is an understatement, most peoples allowance doesn't come close to the 13 weeks kids have off per year) and the guilt of trying to be productive while your children need your attention can be overwhelming. Many parents find themselves stuck in a cycle of feeling like they're failing at work and failing at home simultaneously. Neither is likely true, but when you're in the thick of it, it's very hard to see that clearly.
Days out, holidays, activities, childcare, extra food at home, the summer holidays are expensive. At a time when the cost of living remains high, many families feel real financial pressure to provide a summer that looks a certain way. Keeping up with what other families appear to be doing can leave parents feeling inadequate or guilty, even when they are doing an incredible job with what they have. Your children will remember how they felt with you don't have to take them to Florida to have happy kids.
The Kids Won't Stop Fighting
Sibling arguments, misbehaviour, answering back, pushing boundaries, six weeks without the structure of school can bring out challenging behaviour in even the most well-adjusted children. This is completely normal, but that doesn't make it any easier to deal with day after day. Constantly managing conflict at home is draining in a way that's hard to explain to anyone who isn't living it. Your patience has limits. That doesn't make you a bad parent. It makes you human. For some parents the summer break carries an extra layer of anxiety, a child starting school or nursery for the first time in September. It's a huge milestone and whilst it's exciting, it can also bring a wave of worry that's hard to shake. Will they settle in? Will they make friends? Will they be okay without me? Are they going to suddenly get every illness going from nursery, concerns maybe adding to an already full mental load. For parents who rely heavily on routine to manage their own anxiety, stress or ADHD, this potential upheaval can feel genuinely destabilising even when it's a positive change. Giving yourself permission to feel unsettled about that is important. You don't have to have it all figured out before September arrives.
How Parental Stress Affects Your Mental Health
Stress that builds over weeks without proper release doesn't just disappear when September arrives. Many parents find that after the summer holidays they feel burnt out, low, irritable or anxious in a way that lingers. Some arrive at autumn already running on empty, heading into the darker months without the emotional reserves they need. If this sounds familiar, it may be worth talking to someone . Counselling can provide a space to offload, make sense of how you're feeling and develop strategies to cope.. not just this summer, but with everything that comes after it.

The pressure of summer holidays is so real. To help with the mental load, I use Taskai on my Android to capture all those random tasks and reminders so I don't have to keep them all in my head.
